The Balearic Islands on the global board
The 9th El Económico Forum brings together leaders and experts to analyze the islands’ role in the global economy

A consolidated event looking to the future
On September 23, the Palau de Congressos de Palma hosted the 9th El Económico Forum, one of the most relevant economic gatherings in the Balearic Islands’ calendar, held this year under the title “Global Economy. Giants in Play.”
Nearly four hundred guests attended this highly engaging event, whose main goal was the presentation of the 2024 Yearbook: a publication that compiles the key indicators, economic, business, and tourism data of the Balearic Islands from the previous year, along with insights from over sixty business and social leaders from the region.

Economy, vision, and dialogue in their purest form
The El Económico Forum is a well-established event that renews itself year after year while maintaining a common thread: highlighting the role that the Balearic Islands play within both the national and international economic landscape.
The session opened with an address by Antoni Riera, described by host Paula Serra as “our resident professor.” Speaking from Brussels, Riera delivered a brilliant presentation in digital format.
Next, Serra interviewed Gonzalo Gortázar, CEO of CaixaBank, in a lively and straightforward conversation. Gortázar naturally tackled current economic and social issues, offering a lucid and honest vision of the current financial situation.
A global outlook from Mallorca
The dialogue between diplomats and former ambassadors Rafael Dezcallar and Santiago Cabanas, moderated by journalist Ana Fuentes, provided an international perspective on the rivalry between the United States and China.
Their contrasting views, shaped by decades of diplomatic experience, offered a realistic and insightful analysis of the current global economic and political landscape.
In conclusion, the meeting highlighted the privileged position of the Balearic Islands in the global context — thanks to the stability, security and confidence they offer to residents and investors, consolidating their status as one of the world’s most sought-after destinations.
